Kenya To Close Dadaab, World’s Biggest Refugee
Camp
The Kenyan Government has decided to close Dadaab refugee camp
which is often referred to as the world’s largest refugee camp over the issue
national security. The camp is home to 330000 refugees mostly from Somalia who
have fled from the civil war in their country. According to the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees, the camp was established in 1991 to receive
Somalis fleeing civil war. The Dadaab camps Dagahaley, Hagadera and Ifo were
constructed in 1992.
“Haryana Notifies Act To Provide Reservation
To Backward Classes”
Haryana government on 13 May notified the Haryana Backward Classes
(Reservation in Services and Admission in Educational Institutions) Act 2016
which provides reservation in services and admission in educational
institutions to persons belonging to backward classes in the state. The Act
provides 10 per cent reservation in service for Class III and IV posts and six
per cent reservation in Class I and II posts to the Jat, Jat Sikhs, Ror,
Bishnoi, Tyagi, Mulla Jat or Muslim Jat in Schedule III.
U R Rao To Be conferred “IAF Hall of Fame”
Award
Eminent space scientist Prof U R Rao will be honoured by the
International Astronautical Federation (IAF) with the 2016 ‘IAF Hall of Fame
Award” for his outstanding contribution to the progress of astronautics. The
IAF award is intended to reward personalities for their contributions to the
progress of astronautics and the Federation. The IAF Hall of Fame consists of a
permanent gallery of these personalities, including a citation, biographical
information and a picture, in a special part of the IAF web presence.
Anil Kumble Re-appointed ICC Cricket Committee
Chairman
Former India captain Anil Kumble was on 13 May re-appointed ICC
(International Cricket Council) Cricket Committee chairman for a second term of
three years. Earlier he was appointed as the chairman for his first term in
2012 and now he will continue to head the panel until 2018. Other appointments
Besides, former Indian Rahul Dravid was also named member of the ICC Cricket
Committee. Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene also has been appointed
member. Former Australia off-spinner Tim May has been elected as current player
representative and shall replace Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who has completed his
three-year term.
